Embracing Wildlife: Life Near My Farmhouse

I’m surrounded on all four sides by cattle grazing land so it’s quiet and the local wildlife is comfortable visiting my very little 106 year old farmhouse. I’ve met the two Great Horned owls who nest in the trees a few hundred yards along the creek next to my house. Rabbits live in brush piles and dozens of appropriately named barn swallows build nests in my unused barn.  I have hawks, pheasant, vultures, opossums, and raccoons who visit often. Many geese and ducks fly overhead since they live at the beautiful lake just northeast of here.

My yard is a field of dandelions which I’ve purposely encouraged.  When the puff balls emerge I give them a gentle nudge, urging them to spread even thicker. Dandelion flowers taste wonderful.  The leaves can be bitter once they mature but I love the taste. They also give the local bindweed a run for its money much to my delight.

I live with two cats;

Tigger is a brown and black striped tabby who needed a new home so I drove 75 miles to meet him. He jumped on the sofa and snuggled up under my arm.  From then on we belonged to each other. He was three when he came to live with me and is now almost 10,

Snowdrop is a feisty little all white kitty who showed up at my backdoor friendly and looking for a new place to call home.  She had been abandoned on our country highway about half a mile from the house.  She made her way here and greeted me while I sat outside watching the sunrise.  She moved in a week later.

I hope you find my blog both interesting and useful.

Blessings,

Grandmother Swallow
